The Life of our Mobile Phones

andrew25 April 2013: As part of the lecture series ‘Trinity and its Neighbours’, Centre Director Linda Doyle spoke  about The Invisible Landscape of the City – the secret life of our mobile phones. The lecture, arranged by Trinity College and St Andrew’s Resource Centre (both in Dublin), was an opportunity for Linda to present CTVR’s work and new developments in the use of radio waves in a unique setting – St Andrew’s Parish Church – to an audience of non-engineers but expert mobile phone users.

Collaboration with artist Louise Ward

2 MAy 2013: During Louise Ward’s 7-day residency “Insert Emoticon” at Market Studios in Dublin she created random interactions with the audience and performed actions integrating sculptural objects & sound with invited guests and the public. CTVR Director Linda Doyle, Senior Researcher Tim Forde and PhD student and artist Jessica Foley were invited in to a conversational wide-ranging discussion about cognitive radio. The discussion was broadcast live on radio al cabira (www.radioalcabira.com) and can be downloaded from here (http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/32253903).

The discussion was used as the basis for CTVR’s weekly writing workshop ‘Engineering Fictions’ hosted by Jessica as part of her research and artistic practice.LouiseWard

A bit about Louise:

As an artist, Louise’s sensibility is anchored in shifting perspectives of human behaviour, in the politics of the everyday and in hybrid spaces between internalized worlds of pleasure and externalised habits imposed by society. Her art work tips her/our daily struggles into absurdity, where certain socially conditioned behaviours are reflected upon in a series of repetitive performances.

RTE Collaboration for Science Season: Drama on One

Prof. Linda Doyle and Dr Tim Forde collaborated with RTE to produce a companion piece to the radio drama “What Next for Hedy Lamarr” by Joe O’Byrne.

Hedy Lamarr, known primarily as a 1930’s screen idol, also filed US Patent 2292387 on frequency hopping – a technology designed for radio-guidance of munitions that is now widely deployed in wireless communications.

As part of RTE drama’s  Science Season entitled What is Life, Joe O’Byrne has written and directed a play on the life of Hedy Lamarr. It is accompanied by a companion piece exploring in greater depth the scientific aspects of Hedy Lamarr’s contribution to contemporary communications.

COST Action Management Committee Meeting 11-12 March 2013

The 8th COST Action IC0902 management committee meeting will be held in the vibrant city of Dublin, Ireland, on 11-12 March 2013. The main objective of COST Action IC0902 is to integrate the cognitive concept across all layers of communication systems, resulting in the definition of a European platform for cognitive radio and networks.

In conjunction with the meeting, we will host a mini workshop on Learning and Artificial Intelligence for Cognitive Radio and Networking, which are the topics of interest of the COST Action IC0902 Special Interest Group 2. Contributions presenting early results and work-in-progress on all topics relevant to the IC0902 SIG 2 are welcome and submissions by young researchers are strongly encouraged.

Minister Rabbitte Announces €8.1 Million EU Funding For Telecommunications Project That Will Revolutionise Broadband Provision In Ireland And Europe.

On Wednesday, 9th January, the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Pat Rabbitte, launched ‘DISCUS’, the pan-European research project coordinated by CTVR. The project was awarded funding under the European Union Seventh Framework Programme.

Announcing the EU funding award, Minister Rabbitte said: “Strengthening Europe’s digital economy by advancing areas such as a high speed broadband rollout is a priority for the Irish Presidency of the EU. This pan European telecommunications project led by our own researchers here at CTVR at Trinity will provide concrete results for the benefit of both Ireland and Europe and demonstrates the critical links between research and enterprise that lead ultimately to jobs creation.”

Welcoming this announcement, Provost of Trinity College Dublin, Dr Patrick Prendergast said: “Leading such a top-tier international consortium is an endorsement of the strong international academic reputation that CTVR has earned and raises the profiles of Ireland and Trinity College Dublin as leaders in research and development of future broadband infrastructure. It is also a demonstration of the value to Ireland of continued investment in high quality research.”

‘DISCUS’ coordinators, Dr Marco Ruffini of Computer Science and Professor David Payne of Electronic Engineering at Trinity College Dublin, said: ”the project brings together a pan European team of world class expertise to achieve what will be a revolutionary change to the way future networks are built and operated, to deliver unprecedented service capability and customer experience.”

The ‘DISCUS’ consortium partners are Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), Alcatel Lucent (Germany), Nokia Siemens Networks (Germany), Telefonica Investigacion Y Desarrollo (Spain), Telecom Italia (Italy), Aston University (UK), Interuniversitair micro-electronica centrum (Belgium), III-V lab (France), Tyndall & University College Cork (Ireland), Polatis (UK), Atesio (Germany) and Kungliga Tekniska Hoegskolan (Sweden).

Total investment in this project is €11.7M, of which €8.1 million has been contributed by the EU and the remainder is provided by the partners involved.

Pedro Alvarez joined the team of CTVR PhD students at TCD from the MEEC course at Instituto Superior Technico (IST), Lisbon, Portugal in March 2012. In September he was awarded the Best Student in his class.

That’s Gas! – Zoo Digital Balloon Project Update!

The Talk to EU Zoo Digital balloon launch took place last Friday, 9th November. The launch was a great success. Our colleague, Dr. Keith Nolan and team launched the balloon from Met Eireann’s Valentia observatory just after 11am on Friday. The payload comprised a GPS tracker, a HD video camera, a Samsung Galaxy S2 phone, a radiosonde (measures wind speed, humidity, temperature, altitude), and an ordinary party balloon with an image of Robert Boyle drawn on it.

The balloon travelled for about 2 hours over a point to point distance of 160km and reached a maximum altitude of just over 27km where the temperature was -63 deg C. It burst over Kanturk and descended by parachute to land in a farmer’s field just outside Tipperary town. The farmer rang the number on the payload. The intact payload and video were recovered by the team. The video shows tweets scrolling across the phone screen, the ‘Boyle balloon’ bursting, as well as the scenery.

Seminar presented by Professor Allen MacKenzie, E.T.S. Walton Visiting Professor

Abstract
The history of wireless communications can be told through the history of resource management. In this talk, Professor MacKenzie will describe the ongoing evolution from static to dynamic resource management and the concurrent evolution from homogeneous to heterogeneous networks. From this description, Professor MacKenzie will draw two themes for the future: (1) a need for a pragmatic, bootstrapped approach to dynamic resource assignment, and (2) a demand for robust approaches to automated negotiation between radio agents.
Along the first theme, Professor MacKenzie will show how unbounded dynamicism leads to failure; instead, we need pragmatically engineered systems that can bootstrap wireless communications from simple beginnings to complex sharing schemes. In particular, he will describe a proposed channel assignment scheme for cognitive radio networks that balances the need for topology adaptation to maximize flow rate and the need for a stable baseline topology to support network connectivity. Professor MacKenzie will focus on networks in which nodes are equipped with multiple radios or transceivers, each of which can be assigned to a channel. First, we assign channels independently of traffic, to achieve basic network connectivity and support light loads such as control traffic, and, second, we dynamically assign channels to the remaining transceivers in response to traffic demand. We formulate the problem as a two-stage mixed integer linear program (MILP) and show that with this two-stage approach we can achieve performance comparable to a fully dynamic channel assignment scheme while preserving a static, connected topology.
In the second theme, Professor MacKenzie will then describe the necessity of automated negotiation in future systems, including the relationship between these negotiated dynamics and the bootstrapped approach discussed in the first theme. In particular, he will explain some of the tentative steps that we have taken in this direction, including applications of auction theory and coalition game theory. Finally, he will introduce some potential tools and approaches for future research (and promote some future tutorial presentations on these topics).
Biography
Allen B. MacKenzie received his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from Vanderbilt University in 1999. In 2003 he earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering at Cornell University and joined the faculty of the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech, where he is now an associate professor. During the 2012-2013 academic year, he is an E.T.S. Walton Visiting Professor at CTVR: The Telecommunications Research Centre at Trinity College Dublin.
Prof. MacKenzie’s research focuses on wireless communications systems and networks. His research interests include cognitive radio and cognitive network algorithms, architectures, and protocols and the analysis of such systems and networks using game theory. His past and current research sponsors include the National Science Foundation, Science Foundation Ireland, the US Army, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and the National Institute of Justice.
Prof. MacKenzie is an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Communications and the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing. He also serves on the technical program committee of several international conferences in the areas of communications and networking, and is a regular reviewer for journals in these areas.Prof. MacKenzie is a senior member of the IEEE and a member of the ASEE and the ACM. He is the author of more than 50 refereed conference and journal papers and the co-author of the book Game Theory for Wireless Engineers.

CSET Thesis in 3

The third CSET Thesis in 3 took place on 25th October in the Smock Alley Theatre. The event showcased the research of 18 students from 9 SFI funded CSETS (CLARITY, SBI, CNGL, CRANN, Lero, BDI, CTVR, APC and DERI). Both Séamus Hickey (UL) and Emanuele Di Pascale (TCD) represented CTVR at the event. Emanuele was awarded the audience prize for his presentation entitled ”Buy Local” Paradigm for Next Generation Networks”, which outlines how Fiber-to-the-Home will bring high speed connections to our neighbourhoods, but it will also reduce the capacity gap between these residential access segments and the main information highways in the center of the network; which can lead to congestion. Emanuele proposes the application of the ”buy local” paradigm to future networks, redistributing content in your local community through peer-to-peer, one can avoid costly data transfers through the center of the Internet. His research shows that this approach can improve user experience by speeding up communications, while at the same time reducing power consumption and operational costs for network operators.
