ALL WELCOME

It will be a short, half-day event (8:30 to 13:00) focused on the very vibrant telecoms and communications sector in Ireland and exhibiting a range of the CTVR outputs.

We will have over 50 CTVR exhibits at the event. For those of you who are interested in the bigger picture it will be an opportunity to get an overview both of the key trends & challenges in the communications sector as well as the solutions being delivered in Ireland; solutions for Ireland and solutions with international scope.

For those of you more interested in the technical details, we will have exhibits that range from the physical layer to the network layer to applications and services. You will have the chance to see the latest advances in antenna design, thermal solutions for telecoms, new components and systems  from the photonics and the RF worlds and cognitive radio technologies. On the network side we will be showcasing optical network solutions for Ireland as well as future wireless networking concepts and spectrum access mechanisms. On the services and applications front we will showcase some of our work on smart environments and on white space applications.

New Testbed under construction

Testbed 2009-2013

The hard, dirty work of renovating space to house the CTVR testbed is finally underway. Since moving in to the listed Dunlop Oriel House, the wireless testbed along with the students and researchers that use it have been operating in a cramped, dark, hot corner of the building. The builders are here and the Soviet-era panelling that had divided the room into 4.5 offices, a corridor and a lab is being removed this week.

CTVR is motivated by the ethos ‘theorise, simulate and build’. The upgraded testbed will provide a state-of-the-art experimental setting in which to test theories and concepts and move CTVR’s results beyond simulation and evaluation. The facility will be available to CTVR partners and affiliates – both academic and industrial.

Talk by Andrea Zanella – When bits get wet: introduction to microfluidic networking

Microfluidic is a multidisciplinary field with practical applications to the design of systems, called Lab-on-a-Chip (LoC), where tiny volumes of fluids are circulated through channels with millimeter size and driven into structures where precise chemical/physical processes take place. One subcategory of microfluidic is droplet-based microfluidic, which disperse discrete volumes of fluids into a continuous stream of another immiscible fluid, which act as droplet carrier. Droplets can then be moved, merged, split, or processed in many other ways by suitably managing the hydrodynamic parameters of the LoC…….

About Andrea Zanella:

Andrea Zanella is Assistant Professor at the Department of Information Engineering (DEI), University of Padova (ITALY), where he got the PhD degree in Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering in 2001. Prior of that, he was a visiting scholar at the Department of Computer Science of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he worked with Prof. Mario Gerla on Wireless Networks and Wireless Access to Internet.

Andrea Zanella is one of the coordinators of the SIGnals and NETworking (SIGNET) research lab. His long-established research activities are in the field of protocol design and performance evaluation of wired and wireless networks. More recently, his interest has been attracted by the molecular and nano communication networks, with specific reference to microfluidic systems.

Talk by Jarko Paavola, White Space Trials in Finland

The summer sees two students from Turku in Finland spending time at CTVR working on a PMSE database for the White Spaces Initiative. Their supervisor Jarko Paavola will give a talk on the PMSE database developed in Finland and the white spaces trials there.

Simon Saunders – Small Cells and Much More

Simon Saunders, founding President of the Small Cell Forum, Adjunct Professor at Trinity/CTVR will give a talk on various aspects of his Real Wireless work in CTVR .

International Ph.D. Course: “Cognitive Radios and Networks: Theory and Practice”

CTVR in cooperation with Aalborg University hosted an international course for Telecomms PhD students on 13 May 2013 in Dublin.
Demand for mobile services is increasing fast, and current wireless network technologies will soon be bottlenecks to the growth of both services and market. Furthermore, the apparent spectrum scarcity does not provide enough space for future wireless communications systems. Cognitive Radio (CR) has developed as a possible solution for coping with such problems, giving the possibility of efficiently using/re-using the spectrum resources in an autonomous and opportunistic way. This topic is much current interest by academia and industry, as demonstrated by ongoing activities in standardization bodies such as ETSI and IEEE.
This course provided an overview of the possibilities but also the issues that such a powerful concept offers, ranging from theoretical and algorithmic design to practical implementation on research-oriented software-defined radio platforms like Iris and ASGARD.

Talk by Phillipa Marks: Policy approaches for meeting growing spectrum demand – the role of shared spectrum access

The focus will be on Europe.  Phillipa will present some results from the EU pilot spectrum inventory study (which Plum did with WIK for the European Commission) showing spectrum availability, comment on the nature of access being sought by different users, and then discuss possible sharing models with a focus on Licensed Shared Access.

Licensed shared access (LSA) can be defined as the sharing of licensed spectrum assignments under pre-defined technical conditions, enabling the provider of secondary level sharer to guarantee the quality of the service to be provided.  The primary level spectrum rights holder (incumbent) would facilitate shared use of its spectrum assignment with other users under specified conditions.

ABOUT PHILLIPA MARKS

Phillipa Marks has particular expertise in the economics of spectrum policy and management. She advised the New Zealand government on creating the first ever national market in spectrum in 1989. Since then she has advised on spectrum policy issues in Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East and North America. She developed the approach to spectrum pricing (AIP) now applied in the UK and works on spectrum valuation, licensing and allocation issues. She also works on the analysis of economic, public policy and regulatory issues in the media and telecommunications industries. She has first class honours degrees in mathematics and economics from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand and an M.Litt from Oxford University. Phillipa is a member of the Ofcom Spectrum Advisory Board (OSAB).
